“Do I need planning permission for an extension?”
The short answer: not always.
A lot of home extensions can be built under Permitted Development Rights, which means you may not need to make a full planning application.
But — and this is the important bit — it depends on your property and what you want to build.
Things that can affect it include:
How far the extension projects
Its height
Whether it’s single or double storey
How close it is to boundaries
Whether the property has already been extended
Whether you’re in a conservation area
Whether Permitted Development Rights have been removed from the property
So don’t assume you need planning permission — but don’t assume you don’t either.
The best thing to do is check before you spend money designing something that may not be allowed.
